Story Set in Adriatic Sea in the early 1920's, Porco Rosso tells the tale of a bounty hunter/seaplane pilot Marco Pagott, also known as Porco Rosso (The Crimson Pig). It was not fully explained why or how Porco was cursed and changed into a pig, but the movie hints that Porco was transformed after blacking out and surviving a dogfight during the war in which his friends were killed. Porco flies his red floatplane over the Agean, between Italy and Croatia terrorizing sea-pirates, and making quite a name for himself. He has a relationship with the beautiful Gina, a French singer at a hotel/restaurant. The relationship between Gina and Porco remains somewhat of a mystery. The audience is kept guessing if Porco has any romantic intentions for Gina. Opinions This is quite a charming and humorous film. The story is moderate-paced and the tone is very laidback. The animation is wonderful and it features a great cast of characters. Also, the music from Porco Rosso is exciting, subtle, and beautiful. This film could be the most underrated Ghibli film so far. I hardly think so. It has a lot of good elements to make it a film worth watching. |
